Mainfreight & eCanter: Delivering Sustainability Together

Mainfreight has a mantra – ‘special people, special company’. It takes special companies to change the world and that’s exactly what Mainfreight believes it can achieve – one truck at a time.

Established in 1978 by one man and his 1969 Bedford truck, Mainfreight now operates in 26 countries and employs over 9,000 people – but founder Bruce Plested has never lost sight of what makes his business a success; the people he employs.

Putting people first now means putting the environment first as well. As an international operator, Mainfreight has experienced first-hand some of the unprecedented challenges facing the world in terms of climate change. Now it is implementing its own changes to help make a difference. In New Zealand, one of those changes is becoming an early adopter of the 100% electric FUSO eCanter.

A Mainfreight spokesperson said: “In a bid to reduce our carbon footprint and collect valuable data that will help us further integrate electric vehicles in our fleet, we’re trailing four exciting new FUSO eCanter trucks; two in the Auckland Inner City Zero Emissions Area Trial, one of which is operating under the Owens brand, and two for local deliveries in both Hamilton and Waiheke Island.”

Government has already introduced targets and legislation to lower commercial vehicle emissions. To meet them requires industry leaders and Zero Emissions Heroes such as Mainfreight to take proactive steps throughout its chain of operations.

Mainfreight is also capturing rainwater for use in truck washing, irrigation and ablutions. The two-time Deloitte Top 200 Company of the Year award winner has also carried out major solar installations on many of its buildings and has converted 95% of its warehouse operations to electricity. Where industry leaders go, others would do well to follow.

Mainfreight is an environmentally focused brand that looks after its staff. That’s why FUSO eCanter’s advanced safety features such as Active Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning and Electronic Stability Control are so important to Mainfreight’s mission of building a culture around its people.
